Mascharat are a band from Italy that plays a very atmospheric and renaissance form of black metal and this is a review of their self titled 2017 album which was released by Seance Records.
A nature orientated intro starts off the album along with some keyboards which also gives the recording more of a classical music feeling before going into a very fast musical direction along with a great amount of tremolo picking and blast beats which also gives the songs more of a raw feeling.
Vocals are mostly grim black metal screams while the riffs also use a great amount of melody along with the music also being very heavily rooted in the 90's and when acoustic guitars and clean playing as well as some whispers are also added into certain sections of the recording and some of the tracks are very long and epic in length.
Throughout the recording you can also hear a great mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts while the solos and leads are done in a very melodic fashion along with classical style keyboards also being added into the heavier sections of the songs at times and the music also adds in some modern atmospheric black metal elements into some parts of the tracks and they also bring in a couple of instrumentals as the album progresses and one of the songs also introduces spoken word parts onto the recording.
Mascharat plays a style of black metal that is very raw, melodic and atmospheric sounding while also mixing in elements of classical music, the production sounds very dark and raw while the lyrics are inspired by occult philosophy and written in Italian and cover a concept involving a man and the three masks of Venetian Tradition.
In my opinion Mascharat are a very great sounding atmospheric and renaissance black metal band and if you are looking for something very original, you should check out this album. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Bauta" "Mora" and "Rito". 8/9 out of 10.
