Melan Selas Interview

1.For those that have never heard of you before, can you tell us a little bit about the band?

Melan Selas is a musical project consisted of two members, D.K., also member of Riffobia and Astraea, member of Oletir. We started in the middle of 2015 at Trikala, Greece. All music is from D.K. and vocals and lyrics from Astraea. The first project's work was released as an E.P. by Metal Throne Productions on April of 2016.

2.How would you describe the musical sound that has been presented on the recordings you have released so far?

Melan Selas' music genre is defined as black metal with epic and atmospheric elements, as well as some thrash metal ones.

3.The main member also has a background in thrash, how would you compare black metal to the other style that you play in your full time band?

There is no reason for any comparison between the two genres. It is about the expression of different feelings and musical ideas that exist in an individual.

4.Your lyrics cover a lot of Greek Mythology, can you tell us a little bit more about your interest in this topic and also are you interested in the mythologies of other cultures?

The lyrical themes of the project vary between nature, ancient times and generally philosophy. Greek mythology is not the main theme of our lyrical content. However, there are some references to this concerning the topics we metioned. We are of course fascinated with all kind of ancient mythologies. Greek mythology speaks more to us due to our connection with it.

5.Can you tell us a little bit more about the artwork that is presented on the compilation album you have coming out?

The cover of this release illustates the logo of Melan Selas, that also stands as a symbol. The geometry of it expresses the meaning of the project's name. The black colour in the background is related to darkness and void.

6.What is the meaning and inspiration behind the name 'Melan Selas'?

The name of the project was an idea of Astraea's father. He thought that it suits the music we present. We familiarised it because we realised that it also has a more esoteric meaning in relation with the lyrics of the project. “Melan” means “black” and “selas” means “light” in ancient greek language. The name expresses a contradiction between the dark and the light, the negative element and the positive one. These two opposite forces become one as annihilation and salvation appear at the same time.

7.Currently there are only 2 members in the band, would you be open to expanding the line up for live shows or do you prefer to remain a studio project?

We would surely want to be able to play live with a full line up but this is an ambition for which we cannot be certain at this time.

8.The compilation is coming out on 'Iron Bonehead Productions', how would you compare working with them  to your older label 'Metal Throne Productions'?

It is surely great to work with a label such as “Iron Bonehead Productions”. We are also glad for our collaboration with “Metal Throne Productions”. We always try to give our best and improve ourselves as artists.

9.On a worldwide level how has the feedback been to your music by fans of black metal?

We had a quite good feedback from the fans of the genre until now and we continue our work for our art to be spread even wider.

10.What is going on with 'Riffobia' these days?

Riffobia are currently working on some new stuff for their third full album release.

11.Where do you see the band heading into musically during the future?

This is something that only time will tell.

12.What are some of the bands or musical styles that have had an influence on your music and also what are you listening to nowadays?

Our music is influenced by the classic black metal bands and generally the wider range of heavy metal music. We are listening to anything that speaks to our souls.

13.Before we wrap up this interview, do you have any final words or thoughts?

We thank you very much for the interview. Stay tuned for more.
